5 Steps to Finding Your Life’s Purpose

January 17th 2008 07:57
1. If you’re not in the job of your dreams, or in a job that leads you there, a good idea is to take some time off to give yourself space to find what it is you actually want to do. Sometimes you have to give up the old in order to find the new. When I want to move in a new direction or find the next move, I take some time off work and just rest, hang out, meditate and have time to actually think about what it is I'm doing here and what I want to do. It usually proves invaluable.

2. Secondly, spend some time each day dreaming about your ideal life; what you'd love to do in life. Your life purpose is actually your deepest dreams and longings! Fantastic isn't it? So spend some time day dreaming EVERY day and really get to the heart of what those dreams are. And sometimes you'll think you've found it, and then a day or two later, you'll discover it actually goes deeper. I keep asking myself the million dollar question. `If I had a million dollars and knew I didn't have to work for the rest of my life, what would I do?' This is a great way of discovering what your life's purpose is. Of course first of all I think `I want to travel, buy this and that', but after I’ve done all that, what would I do then? What would I do that I love so much, I would do without getting paid for it? That's a big clue - your life purpose is the thing or things you would do, whether you were paid for doing them or not.

3. Your life purpose is something you have always done and enjoyed. So look back over your childhood and early adulthood at the things you still do each day that you enjoy. Do you like cooking for the family? Do you get a kick out of playing with cars? Did you always write great horror stories as a kid? These are all clues. You'll usually find that what you love doing, you've been doing all along!

4. Then, write down what these dreams are. Apparently 5% of people in world are actually living their dream (their life purpose). And the thing all these people have in common is... that they wrote it all down. It solidifies what you want, what your plan is, and if you then pin it up on the wall where you look at it each day, that solidifies it more. You'll be amazed at the results. It may not happen overnight, but it will happen!

5. Lastly, take action only when it feels good. If you don't feel like doing something, you're going in the wrong direction. If you've got a real impulse to call someone, start something, or look up a topic of interest, do that. Feeling excited and happy about doing something is a sure-fire sign that it's part of your life purpose.

Whenever we put our mind to something with passion and a real desire for change, we start attracting the things we need to do it. So start really thinking about what it is you want.
Once you’re excited about your potential opportunities – your dreams - set your mind to it, and opportunities and people will start showing up.

Good Luck!

When I see headings like tis I usually say, "Oh Gawd, here we go again."
But you have the money, Christine. I have no idea whether these ideas are your own or borrowed from somewhere, but it doesn't matter.
Spot on, correct, and as someone involved almost full time in personal and relationship development issues, I can only add my endorsement of your post. Not only that - but that I know from personal experience that these ideas are absolutely the way things work.
Hmm, sounds like a good topic for a post.

Thanks Grumpy!

Yes, definitely my own experience - I started in earnest with it a couple of years ago when I gave up my job with no idea what I would do next, only that I needed to give myself time to find that out. I'd read about life purpose before and had these ideas in mind and basically gave myself the time and space to experiment. I called it an experiment too, just to keep myself open to all possibilities.

Happy you liked the post. if you write more on the topic, let me know.
